FIELD PLANTS DEPARTMENTS

Researches have been conducting in the field plants department of Black-Sea Agricultural Research Institute as five units: industrial plants, leguminous plants, warm and cool climate cereals, pasture and fodder plants, medical plants.

The aim of the studies is to determine the most suitable agricultural products and product models for the institute region, to increase product variability and production, to decrease production costs, to produce technologies which are suitable for environment, to develop agricultural technologies which are suitable for farmer needs and farmer conditions, to prepare agronomy technique packages which are available for cultivation with machine, to develop the cultivars having distinguished properties, resistant to diseases and pests and high yielding, from the sources which are enough for consumption, stabile and having high quality, suitable for market, domestic and renewable, to transfer these materials to producers, private sector and industry staff.

 FOOD GRAIN LEGUMİNOUS PLANTS SECTION

Studies on breeding, agronomy, preservation and characterization of genetic sources and quality analysis on dry bean and chickpea have been going on. National Dry Bean Project coordination has been conducting by this section under the project "National Leguminous Plants Researches". Dry bean cultivars Zülbiye and Akdağ have been improved by this project, registered and presented to farmer usage. Chick Pea cultivars Çağatay, Gülümser, Sezenbey and Zuhal have been registered under the Project "Chick Pea Breeding Researches in the Black Sea Region of Turkey". The chick Pea cultivars Çağatay, Sezenbey and Zuhal improved in the Black Sea Research Institute has been grown in 45% of Turkey chick pea area.

 WARM-COOL CLIMATE CEREALS SECTION

Breeding and agronomy studies on maize and rice have been going on in this section. Hybridization and seed production have been done with about 600 selfed lines under the project "Maize Improvement in the Black Sea Region". So the cultivars "Karadeniz Yıldızı ve TTM- 813" have been grown by farmers intensively for long years. Total 70 ton seed was sold in the last ten years. Samada 07 improved for silage was registered in 2009. This section has also been conducting the coordination of the project "National maize Cultivation Techniques". Black Sea region has the second rank after the Thrace region in Turkey regarding rice growing area. Rice breeding and agronomy studies have been conduced in this section for long years. The rice cultivars Karadeniz, Kızılırmak, Bafrayıldızı and Mevlütbey have been improved by the rice improvement project and three lines were registered as well as one lines were presented to registration. Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute has also been conducting the coordination of the project "National Rice Cultivation Techniques". The wheat cultivars Canik, Sakin , Özcan and Altındane which were suitable for bread making as well as the barley cultivar were registered as a result of cool climate cereal researches. In addition 2 lines which are suitable for bread making are about to be registered.

PASTURE AND FODDER CROPS SECTION

Primarily agronomy and breeding projects regarding fodder crops grown intensively in the region have been conducted in this section. This section also has efficient role on pasture. As a result of the conducted studies, the vetch cultivar named Albayrak was registered so far. In addition improvement program on Gelemen alfaalfa is about to result. On the other hand breeding, agronomy and gene preservation studies on clover, annual grass, biannual grass, Lotus corniculatus, fodder beet, Poterium sangiosorba etc. have been conducting. The studies regarding pasture breeding and artificial pasture establishment have been resulted. National Pasture breeding and National Artificial Pasture Establishment Project coordination as well as coordination of ten provinces in the Black Sea region regarding pasture breeding have been conducting by this section. There are 95 projects in the coordination of regional pasture improvement. One of these projects has been rewarded with golden flag.

Studies on breeding, agronomy, preservation and characterization of genetic sources and quality analysis on soybean and rapeseed have been going on. National soybean Project coordination has been conducting by this section under the project "National Leguminous Plants Researches". In addition 2 lines which are suitable for oil farmers are about to be registered.
