The science of biotechnology has made great development in the last twenty years in the world and in our country. Determination of plant species and varieties degree of kinship among plants can be put forward as a true and accurate by using biotechnological methods and markers. In addition, some agricultural important features (disease resistance, drought resistance, yield and quality criteria), can be analyzed at genetic level. With the help of tissue culture techniques these can be done; reproduction of endangered species with low reproductive capabilities, improving homozygous plant lines in a short period by using doubled-haploid method.

Plant Biotechnology Unit constructed the necessary infrastructure in 1996 and started to work for solving the problems of classical plant breeding programs.

 

Plant Biotechnology Unit's objectives;


1. Genetical determination of plant species and varieties, define the degree of kinship,
2. With the marker assisted selection technique, the existence of genes important in cultivated plants, wild relatives of agricultural plants, developed cultivars,
3. Rapid reproduction of plants by using tissue culture methods and to obtain virus-free plants
4. Doubled haploid methods help shorten the breeding period and the duration of the development of genetically pure lines.
